Matej Varga
Matej Varga is the 1. Principal Double Bass of Oper Frankfurt, acclaimed for his versatility as both a classical double bassist and bass guitarist. His musical path began at the J. L. Bellu Conservatory in Banská Bystrica, where he studied under Robert Ragan from 2006 to 2011. His exceptional artistic achievements led him to pursue studies at renowned institutions: first with Prof. Božo Paradžik at the University of Music Freiburg (2011), and later with Prof. Heinrich Braun at the University of Music and Performing Arts Munich (2017).
Throughout his career, Matej has gained invaluable experience working under many of the world’s leading conductors, including Mariss Jansons, Sir Simon Rattle, Zubin Mehta, Herbert Blomstedt, Gustavo Dudamel, Bernard Haitink, and Daniele Gatti, among others.
He has performed with numerous prestigious orchestras and ensembles. Most prominently, he spent many years with the BRSO (Symphonieorchester des Bayerischen Rundfunks), gaining deep experience through both a fixed-term contract and an academy. He also completed internships with the SWR Symphony Orchestra Baden-Baden Freiburg, served as Principal Double Bass with CHAARTS, worked as Co-Principal Bassist with the Düsseldorf Symphony Orchestra, was a permanent member of the Gärtnerplatztheater Munich, and held an internship position with the Philharmonisches Orchester Freiburg/Theater.
His chamber music collaborations include performances with internationally celebrated ensembles such as the Schumann Quartett, Casals Quartett, Galatea Quartett, and Stradivari Quartett, further enriching his artistic breadth and depth.
In addition to his performance career, Matej has also been active as a pedagogue, teaching at the University of Music Freiburg im Breisgau.
Along his musical journey, Matej’s passion and excellence have been recognized through numerous awards and scholarships, including the Rotary Club Starnberg Grant for Double Bass (2016), the Helmut Spehl Prize Freiburg for exceptional talent (2013), and First Prize at the Slovak National Competition for String Players (2008).
